Glacier National Park is a popular travel destination with an interesting history and plenty of facts visitors may not be aware of.

  1. The park was established as a park in 1910, and encompasses over 1 million acres with 131 named lakes and 631 unnamed lakes
  2. There are over 1,000 plant species and hundreds of different animals
  3. The 53-mile (85 km) Going-to-the-Sun road was completed in 1932
  4. The mountains of Glacier National Park began forming 170 million years ago
  5. According to archeological evidence, Native Americans first arrived in the Glacier area some 10,000 years ago
  6. In 1897, the park was designated as a forest preserve
  7. The Great Northern Railway, under the supervision of president Louis W. Hill, built a number of hotels and chalets throughout the park in 1910 to promote tourism
  8. Visitation to Glacier National Park now averages 3 million visits annually
  9. Major reconstruction of the Going-to-the-Sun Road began in 2007 and was completed in 2018
  10. The lakes of Glacier National Park remain cold year-round, with temperatures rarely above 50°F (10°C) at their surface (cold water lakes such as these support little plankton growth, ensuring that the lake waters are remarkably clear)
  11. Two hundred waterfalls are scattered throughout the park
  12. The rocks found in the park are primarily sedimentary rocks and were deposited in shallow seas over 1.6 billion to 800 million years ago
  13. There are six mountains in the park over 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) in elevation
  14. Glacier National Park is dominated by mountains which were carved into their present shapes by the huge glaciers of the last ice age
  15. During the tourist season, daytime high temperatures average 60 to 70°F (16 to 21°C), and nighttime lows usually drop into the 40°F (4°C) range
  16. Glacier National Park is part of a large preserved ecosystem which is primarily untouched wilderness of a pristine quality. Virtually all the plants and animals which existed at the time European explorers first entered the region are present in the park today
  17. A total of 260 species of birds have been recorded, including raptors such as the bald eagle, golden eagle, peregrine falcon, osprey and several species of hawks
  18. A total of 23 species of fish reside in park waters
  19. The closest airport is 5 miles north of Kalispell, Montana, southwest of the park
  20. A fleet of restored 1930s White Motor Company coaches, called Red Jammers, are used for tours on all main roads in the park
  21. Historic wooden tour boats, some dating back to the 1920s, operate on some of the larger lakes
  22. Over half of the visitors to the park report taking a hike on the park’s nearly 700 miles (1,127 km) of trails
  23. The largest lake in the park, Lake McDonald was carved out by a glacier
  24. Researchers from around the world come to study the unique geology of Glacier Park
  25. The first white man to see Glacier Park was most likely Hugh Monroe, a Hudson’s Bay Company trapper known to the Blackfeet as Rising Wolf
  26. Mountain goats are an important part of Glacier’s identity
  27. Triple Divide Peak in Glacier Park has the unique distinction of sending water to the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans
  28. The total number of Glacier Park buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places is 350
  29. Glacier National Park offers a free shuttle service for much of the summer season, with shuttles operating from Apgar Transit Center on the west side as well as St. Mary Visitor Center on the east side.
